Why footprint area alone will always undersell the job

A flat roof's surface area equals its footprint. Every degree of pitch beyond that increases the true surface area — the roof slopes upward, so its actual sloped surface is longer than the flat distance it spans. The relationship is true area = footprint ÷ cos(pitch).

At a steep 45° pitch, the true roof area is over 40% more than the building footprint — a substantial difference if you're quoting or ordering materials off footprint alone.

Why tile coverage varies so much

Tiles-per-m² depends entirely on tile type: large interlocking concrete tiles cover roughly 10/m², while small plain clay tiles can need 60 or more per m² due to their heavy overlap. Always check your specific tile manufacturer's coverage rate rather than trusting a generic default for a real order.

Worked example

A 60 m² building footprint with a 35° pitch has a true roof area of 73.25 m² — 22% more than the footprint. With a 10% waste allowance and 10 tiles/m² coverage, that's 806 tiles.

This calculates a single-plane equivalent area from footprint and pitch — a simplification that works well for straightforward gable/duo-pitch roofs. Complex roofs (hips, dormers, multiple pitches) need each roof plane measured and calculated separately for an accurate total.

How do I find my roof's pitch?+
Use a pitch gauge or angle finder against the roof surface, or measure the rise over a fixed horizontal run (e.g. rise ÷ run, converted to degrees via arctan) — many UK roofs sit between 30-45°, with 35° being a very common default for pitched tile roofs. Does this work for hip roofs?+
This gives a reasonable single-plane approximation, but a true hip roof has multiple differently-angled planes meeting at hips and ridges — for an accurate material order on a complex roof, each plane should be measured and calculated individually.
Do I need to add extra for the ridge and verges?+
Yes — ridge tiles, verge tiles, and flashing are ordered separately by linear metre, not included in the per-m² tile count this calculator produces.
