Multiply area by depth for volume, then convert to weight using about 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre for asphalt. A domestic driveway is typically laid 50mm thick over a compacted stone sub-base.
50mm of wearing-course tarmac over a 100–150mm compacted stone sub-base is standard for a domestic driveway.
At 50mm depth, roughly 0.12 tonnes (120kg) per square metre.
Tarmac is cheaper and faster to lay; block paving looks better but costs more and needs more maintenance.
